Veterans Day: A History Of Military Honor

The history of Veterans Day is clearly explained in this publication. Veterans Day is an annual Federal Holiday, set aside to honor United States military veterans. Veterans Day is an annual Federal Holiday that is celebrated in America every year on November 11, for the sole purpose of honoring and celebrating United States military veterans who are alive, and also United States military veterans who have died.

Veterans Day is a day when Americans can show their patriotic love for America in the simple gesture of displaying American flags on their front lawns for all people to see. How is Veterans Day different from Memorial Day? According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, many Americans are confused about the meaning of these two national holidays. Also, there are Americans who do not know the reason why Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th every year. In other words, many Americans are not familiar with the history of Veterans Day.

Here is a little bit of history about Veterans Day, in the hopes that the reasons for celebrating these two national United States annual holidays, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day, will be clearly understood:

Veterans Day was previously known as Armistice Day. The legal holiday known as Armistice Day was created to celebrate the end of World War I.  World War I ended on November 11, 1918. The Act of 1938 was passed on November 11, 1938. Armistice Day was "'dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" 1 Armistice Day paid tribute to veterans of World War I.

After the end of World War II and the Korean War, various Veterans organizations asked the 83rd U.S. Congress to amend the Act of 1938, by substituting the word "Veterans" for the word "Armistice." This legislation was approved on June 1, 1954. The original date of Armistice Day, November 11, was kept, and, to this day, Veterans Day, which is an annual holiday celebrated every year on November 11, is the day Americans take the time to remember and honor all American Veterans who served in any war.

Memorial Day honors servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.

Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s letter to Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of Veterans' Affairs, designating him Chairman, Veterans Day National Committee:

The White House Office

October 8, 1954

Dear Mr. Higley:

I have today signed a proclamation calling upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954 as Veterans Day. It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure proper and widespread observance of this day. With the thought that it will be most helpful to coordinate the planning, I am suggesting the formation of a Veterans Day National Committee. In view of your great personal interest as well as your official responsibilities, I have designated you to serve as Chairman. You may include in the Committee membership such other persons as you desire to select and I am requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch to assist the Committee in its work in every way possible.

I have every confidence that our Nation will respond wholeheartedly in the appropriate observance of Veterans Day, 1954.

Sincerely,

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER  1
What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Memorial Day remembers and honors military members who have died in service to America, or died due to war injuries. Although military members who have died in service to America are also honored on Veterans Day, the main purpose of Veterans Day is to honor and thank military veterans who are still living. Veterans Day also honors all military veterans who served America in the military, whether in times of war or in times of peace.

Veterans Day is not just an annual Federal Holiday in which some people receive a day off from their jobs. Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, has a purpose. Please remember to take a few moments during the day to remember those brave military veterans who willingly sacrifice their lives in order to protect Americans and America. Veterans Day is a day to wave your American flags and show your patriotism.

Marines Guard Heaven's Streets on 235th Birthday

Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps! Marines, proud members of The United States Marine Corps, or USMC, celebrate their 235th birthday today, Wednesday, November 10, 2010.

You are invited to celebrate the Marine Corps' 235th birthday at the Marine Corps' official ball. The Commandant of the Marine Corps is inviting the general public to officially celebrate the Marine Corps' 235th birthday. The United States Marine Corps' 235th Happy Birthday Celebration will be this coming Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. This is the Marine Corps' official ball, and everyone is invited. For more information, please click Commandant's Marine Corps Birthday Ball. If you are unable to attend the Marine Corps' 235th birthday ball, please contact your local Marine Corps' unit to find out if there will be a birthday celebration in your area.

The Marine Corps began on November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to pass a resolution which stated: "'two Battalions of Marines be raised' for service as landing forces with the fleet." The Continental Marines were established with this resolution. These Marines served on both land and sea. The Continental Marines ended after the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. The Marine Corps was established again on July 11, 1798. The Marines often fought against Barbary Pirates along "the Shores of Tripoli." The United States Marine Corps has protected America throughout its long and honorable history. 1

The "Marines' Hymn" has been widely used since the mid-1800's, but the "Marines' Hymn" did not become the official hymn of the Marine Corps until 1929. The writer of The Marines' Hymn remains anonymous to this day. There is a bit of a controversy as to who actually wrote the hymn. According to Heritage Press International -- History of the Marines' Hymn, Col. A. S. McLemore, USMC, spent years trying to discover who wrote "The Marines' Hymn." Finally, in 1878, Col. McLemore told the Marine Band leader that he believed the hymn had been adopted from Jacques Offenbach's operetta "Genevieve de Brabant." However, other people think the hymn was derived from a Spanish folk tune. 2

Lyrics to the famous "Marines' Hymn"

From the Halls of Montezuma,
To the Shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of UNITED STATES MARINES.

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze,
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far off northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job --
The UNITED STATES MARINES.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By UNITED STATES MARINES. 2

Happy 235th Birthday, United States Marine Corps! Thank you, honored Marines, for everything you have done, and continue to do, for Americans and America.
If there is any truth to the lyrics in The "Marines' Hymn," regarding the sentiment that Marines even guard Heaven's streets, then I am glad to know I can depend on the Marines to keep me safe!

Good Men Are Indeed Hard To Find

Are there any good men left in the world? Where are the heroes, the true good men? Why does the expression "A good man is hard to find" ring more true today than ever? Do you know any good men, or do the men you meet seem good when, in fact, they are not? Do you know any men who truly seek God's direction in their lives?

Is there even such a thing as a good man? How can you tell? A man can be a good man without being perfect. A tireless and completely unselfish act of loving kindness is one sign that a man might be a good man. When an elderly husband becomes his wife's caretaker, and sacrifices many hours of his life for her welfare, this is a good man. When a young man joins the Army and becomes a soldier because he wants to protect and defend America and Americans, this is a good man.

Even though no man can ever truly be good, due to the inherent sinful nature in all human beings, some men stand apart from the masses of men, nobly performing their heroic deeds to a largely ungrateful humanity. These are the men who inspire and influence many other men who wish to emulate their inner strength. These are the good men who are hard to find.

Two Kinds of Men: Hero and Anti-Hero

Are you the kind of man who is a hero, or are you an anti-hero? A man needs to decide at some point in his life what kind of man he is going to be, either a hero or an anti-hero, and his actions should reflect this important decision. Heroes are self-confident, but seek God's face when making important decisions.

What does it mean to seek God's face? This means you pray and ask God for guidance, even though the answer might not be the one you expect. For example, if you are thinking about cheating on your wife, God is not going to approve of your actions, even if your wife happens to be far less than perfect.

Jack Bauer, the character in Fox TV's now defunct 24 series, is actually both a hero and an anti-hero, depending upon the situation at hand. On the one hand, Jack Bauer is a hero, an anti-terrorist who is not afraid to be politically incorrect, but on the other hand, Jack Bauer is also an ex-heroin addict who ended up being a disappointing anti-hero, actually a serial killer, during 24's last remaining episodes.

Heroes practice Agape love, which is a special kind of love that places the welfare of others above his own. In other words, a hero is completely unselfish, and has enough faith in God, when faced with either a serious temptation, or a difficult decision, to do the right thing. What difference does it make if you do the right thing? Do your actions matter that much? Yes, your actions do indeed count more than you might realize. Everything you do affects those you care about, and can even affect total strangers.

You have the power to set either a good or bad example to those around you, whether in person or online. If you are an online author with your own blog, a freelance writer, or are involved in forums and online social networking sites on the Internet, you have the capability and responsibility of setting a good example to those who read your words.

Heroes are brave men who risk their lives to save others. A few examples of everyday American heroes range from your neighborhood policemen and firemen to soldiers, marines, and all those courageous men who protect and defend all Americans and their country, the United States of America.

Do you want people who read what you write to be positively or negatively affected? Do you want your wife, relatives, friends, and Internet buddies to benefit in a good way from the words you write? If you do, choose what kind of man you are: hero or anti-hero.

Memorial Day Prayer For American Soldiers and Heroes

I wrote this prayer for American soldiers, heroes and everyone who seeks God's face. I ask God to bless all of you.

If you have been the target of physical, intellectual, or emotional intolerance, this prayer is also for you.

King James Bible
Psalm 24:6: "This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah." 1

King James Bible
Psalm 27:8: "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek." 2
Memorial Day Prayer For American Soldiers and Heroes

May you always be blessed by the one, true God.

May He always lift you up out of depression and hopelessness.

May you always be directed and guided by Him whenever you need to make decisions about anything important in your life.

May you learn to be tolerant toward those that believe differently than you do.

May you learn to be tolerant toward those of other ethnic and religious backgrounds.

May you understand that God's tolerance far surpasses your imperfect interpretation.

May you come to an understanding that even those who vehemently protest belief in God may, in fact, be closer to Him than you realize. Sometimes protest is an outward form of an inner spiritual struggle.

May you continue to walk on a good and righteous path, and may no harm or evil ever befall you.

May you never give your fear the power to destroy your dreams.

Amen.

Military Tells Congress Not To Change "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Gay Law

Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen told the House Armed Services Committee that changing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Gay Military Law is a mistake, and that the military needs to give their feedback before any changes are made.

"'Our military must be afforded the opportunity to inform us of their concerns, insights and suggestions if we are to carry out this change successfully,' Gates and Mullen wrote to the panel's chairman, Missouri Democrat Ike Skelton." {1}

BOSNIAN War Effort Against Genocide Failed Partly Due To Open Gay Dutch Soldiers

The Bosnian war effort to fight against genocide by Dutch soldiers was not successful partly due to to "open" gay soldiers being allowed in the army, according to John Sheehan, a former NATO commander who retired from the military in 1997.

John Sheehan "shocked some at a Senate Armed Services Committee, where Sheehan spoke in opposition to a proposal to allow gays to serve openly in the U.S. military. Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin told Sheehan he was 'totally off-target.'" 1

"Sheehan said European militaries deteriorated after the collapse of the Soviet Union and focused on peacekeeping because 'they did not believe the Germans were going to attack again or the Soviets were coming back.'" 1

"Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and other nations believed there was no longer a need for an active combat capability in the militaries, he said. 'They declared a peace dividend and made a conscious effort to socialize their military - that includes the unionization of their militaries, it includes open homosexuality.'" 1

"Sheehan said European militaries deteriorated after the collapse of the Soviet Union and focused on peacekeeping because 'they did not believe the Germans were going to attack again or the Soviets were coming back.'" 1

"Levin, D-Mich., appeared incredulous. "'Did the Dutch leaders tell you it (the fall of Srebrenica) was because there were gay soldiers there?' he asked." 1

"'Yes,' Sheehan said. 'They included that as part of the problem.' He said the former chief of staff of the Dutch army had told him." 1

Retired General: Gays Weakened Dutch Army
Inclusion of Gays Was Contributing Factor to Peacekeepers' Inability to Prevent 1995 Bosnian Genocide, Man Says *

CONSERVATIVE WORDSMITH.COM COMMENTARY: This unexpected information must have been a shock to liberals attending the Senate Armed Services Committee. John Sheehan, a retired U.S. general, received his information from a reliable source, the former chief of staff of the Dutch army. But, knowing how liberals can't stand to face the truth even when it is staring them in the face, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sheehan's statment induces short-term memory loss in those that heard it.
