We all know that Jack Bauer is not a real person, and that actor Kiefer Sutherland is not Jack Bauer. So why is it that so many people react to Fox TV 24's Jack Bauer as though he is real?
The fact is that Jack Bauer seems very real because he represents the real man syndrome. Kiefer Sutherland protrays Jack Bauer in the same venue that Clint Eastwood, James Dean, and Clark Gable portrayed their heroic male characters. People, both men and women, evidently miss seeing more men acting like men on TV and in movies.
People don't only want to watch Jack Bauer -- they want to think with him, and try to figure out what Jack would do, because Jack often (although not always) does the right thing. And the right thing is not always politically correct when it comes to Jack Bauer's interrogation of Muslim Jihadist terrorists and other menaces to society.
Jack Bauer now has an equal, former FBI agent Renee Walker, portrayed by Annie Wershing. Renee Walker started outas being rather timid in 24's Season 7, but, due to Jack Bauer's influence, has now graduated to the school of extreme politcal incorrectness, and people love it. Would any of this be fun and addicting if everyone on 24 always did the politically correct thing? We all know the answer to this one is a big fat "NO."
