Susan Boyle said, after her triumphant performance Saturday, April 11, on Britain's Got Talent, that she is "absolutely gobsmacked." 1
Now there's a new word for you and for me also! What does the word gobsmacked mean exactly?
According to an article by Richard Nordquist, "'The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (2006) defines 'gobsmacked' as 'being speechless or lost for words as the result of amazement or shock."' Similarly, Sara Tulloch, author of The Oxford Dictionary of New Words (1991), offers the definition 'astounded, flabbergasted; speechless or incoherent with amazement; overawed.'"
Gobsmacked is "a combination of gob, mouth, and smacked. It means 'utterly astonished, astounded.'" 2
